Mental Health Counseling and Psychotherapy

What is the difference between mental health counseling and psychotherapy?

Simply stated, mental health counseling targets a specific problem or symptom; for example, addiction or stress management. The focus here is on identifying behavior patterns, and may include problem solving or learning new techniques for coping with the problem areas. Also, mental health counseling is usually considered short-term therapy. Whereas, psychotherapy typically refers to longer term treatment.

It can be difficult to determine if events in your past are affecting your mental health in the present, and this is where psychotherapy comes in. Many people don’t realize just how much past traumatic events can subconsciously affect present-day decisions, motivations, and behaviors.

Psychotherapy relies more on exploring your past and working together with your therapist to understand how your past experiences have brought you to the place you are today.

Additionally, Psychotherapy is also utilized in the maintenance of ongoing, chronic mental health issues such as Major depressive disorder, Bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia.

Feeling Challenged

We are all faced with obstacles along our journey to finding purpose, fulfillment and relationships that bring us excitement and joy. Perhaps you feel like you are being pulled in a million different directions all at the same time. Or maybe you’re struggling with making the “right” decision about your job, your friendships, or your romantic relationship. Are emotions getting in the way of bringing your true self to your job performance or everyday interactions?

Believe me I’ve been there. It’s why I’m so passionate about what I do. Ultimately, my goal is to help you identify and work toward the changes you desire in your life and relationships, while providing you with the skills and tools to become more mindful, resilient, and compassionate toward yourself and others in your life.

Time for Solutions

If you’ve been suffering through any of these challenges you need time to focus on your own needs and goals with the counsel and support of a trained mental health professional.

My approach in therapy is to meet you exactly where you are in your life, and provide you with a healthy space where you can explore and identify solutions that fit your life and goals.

By working with me you will be with someone who understands the world you are living in. So if you’re still reading the information on this page then perhaps there is a part of you that is ready to explore a different way of living.

Seeing yourself differently is the first step toward living the life you truly want to live.
